Before entering the service, he married the former Margaret “Marge” Armes on March 31, 1940 at the First Federated Church in North Jackson where he remained a member for 73 years. They spent 48 years together until her passing in 1988.

For 40 years, he and Marge owned and operated the “Blue Ridge Tavern” in North Jackson. Art had a saying to his customers, “You are a stranger here but once!”
After the war, Art owned his own gas station on South Avenue in Youngstown. He drove truck for over 40 years for different companies and then himself, teaching his sons “the way of the road” and helping them to become independent truck drivers themselves. Up until just a few years ago, he delivered trailers for Tralex Trailer in Canfield.

He loved the countryside and making new friends along the way. He enjoyed camping, traveling, loved the outdoors and country music. He taught himself to play the harmonica and whistled and yodeled like a real professional. He always enjoyed a good joke and was known as a free spirit.
