Tina “Tienna” Louise Newransky Obituary

HUBBARD, Ohio – Tina “Tienna” Louise Newransky, of Hubbard, Ohio, formerly of Masury, Ohio, received her wings at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2018, while a patient at the Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, following an extended illness. She was 51.

Tina was born July 3, 1966, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a daughter to Gerald P. “Hoot” and Hilda Mae (Jessup) Gibson.

She graduated from Sharon High School in 1984 and furthered her education by attending ITT, Youngstown, Ohio.

Her former memberships included the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post# 5286, Farrell, Pennsylvania and Women of the Moose, Chapter 714, Monroe, Michigan however she was most proud to be a homemaker for her family.

In her spare time, she enjoyed reading with a cup of hot tea, hanging out with her family and friends, sitting around a bonfire and putting her toes in the water along any beach.

She is survived by her children, Amanda L. Newransky, Hubbard, Jimmy Newransky, Lincoln Park, Michigan and Mark Newransky, Jr., Ypsilanti, Michigan; her granddaughter, Anna Marie Newransky; her siblings, Rhonda Grubbs and her husband, Eddie, North Brooksville, Florida, Deb Blanchett and her husband, Dave, Masury, Ohio, Kevin Gibson, Phoenix, Arizona, Denise Miller, Greenville, Pennsylvania and Tricia Miller, Carleton, Michigan; her former husband, Mark M. Newransky, Sr., Lincoln Park; her sister-in-law, Chrisann Marie Newransky and her husband, Jose Suaya, Manhattan, New York and her extended family too.

Preceding her in death are her parents; brother, James Stewart and aunts, Phyllis Spencer, Carol Carter and Ellen Jessup.

In accordance with her wishes, an old fashioned wake will be held at a later date.

NILES, Ohio – Anna Marie Cline, 87, passed away in the arms of her loving husband and surrounded by her family at 10:05 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2018 following an extended illness.

She was born in McDonald, Ohio on May 19, 1930 the daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Krepic) Squiric and lived in this community all of her life.

She was a 1948 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School and was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

She was a secretary and bookkeeper at Globe Union Battery Factory in Mineral Ridge, American Welding and RMI. She also worked as a part-time bookkeeper for Design Coating.

She enjoyed traveling on vacations, watching football, playing cards with her friends and golfing. She especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Anna is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leroy Cline whom she married on October 10, 1953; daughter, Karen (Brian) Smith of Niles; son, Jerry (Marty) Cline of Seabrook Island, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Jason Cline, Amanda (Ron) Van Horn, Kelli (Richard) Evans, Kristen Caldwell; five great-grandchildren, Logan, Jake, Luke, Trevor, Cameron; three brothers and a sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Calling Hours will be Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Douglas Brown will officiate.

Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery.

Susan Gayle Novak Obituary

WARREN, Ohio – Susan G. Novak, 63, was called home in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St. Joseph Health Care in Warren.

Susan was born in Cleveland, Ohio oldest daughter of Shirley (Milheim) Moran.

Susan lived each day with a full loving heart. She was proud to say she was a four-year cancer survivor and lead a life of true selflessness and strength that most could only dream of living to her example. She truly touched the life of every person with whom she came in contact.

Susan worked at St. Joseph Health Center for 30 years as Manager of Composition and Employee Recognition; a job at which she excelled. She found many lifelong friends including her closest friends, Jyoti and Reima.

Her joyous heart belonged first to her family and friends and second to her beautiful garden and home. Her garden was a reflection of who she was – each flower was planted and protected with care, love and protection.

Susan will be missed dearly but we take solace in the fact that she now sits with the sun shining brightly and showering us with her love and protection from above. Like her garden, her friends and family will continue to grow in her love.

Visitation for Susan will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Lane Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel, Warren, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 Noon.

She is survived by her close and loving family; her soulmate and loyal loving husband of 29 years, Ed Novak; loving brothers, Jeffrey and Michael Arnovitz; her brother-in-law, Joe Novak and sister-in-law, Priscilla Warren; her one and only precious daughter, Rachel Gulakowski and the true light of her life her only granddaughter, Ava Berlyn Ebel.

Susan was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Ronald Moran.

Mary (Lawrence) Baker Obituary

NILES, Ohio – Mary Lawrence Baker, 91, of Niles, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018, at her residence with her caring and loving family by her side.

She was born December 17, 1926, in Woodland, Pennsylvania, the daughter of George and Mary Bodnar Yakus.

Mary was a member of St. Stephen Church in Niles and was the head cook at Fairhaven School for 15 years, retiring in 1982.

Mary will always be remembered for her beautiful smile. One of her biggest joys was to sit on her front porch and give the neighborhood children cookies and suckers as they walked home from school.

Mary is survived by two sons, Edward G. Lawrence of Niles and Anthony J. (Carol) Lawrence of Niles; a daughter, Deborah J. Rosenberger of Niles; two brothers, George Yakus of Alaska and John Kersen of Champion; a sister, Julia Lawrence of Niles; two grandchildren, Marc (Randi) Lawrence of Cortland and Andrea (Mike) Roman of Niles and five great-grandchildren, Masen Marinkobich, Cholie Roman, Spencer Roman, Halle Lawrence and Colton Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward W. Lawrence, the father of her children, whom she married in February of 1947 and died on November 20, 1969; her second husband, George Baker, Sr., whom she married May 28, 1994 and died November 22, 2016; a brother, Anthony Yakus and two sisters, Helen Fasulo and Shirley Dean.

As per Mary’s wishes, there are no calling hours or services.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery.

The family request that material contributions be made in Mary’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Henry L. Kolat Obituary

POLAND, Ohio – Henry L. Kolat, 89 of Poland, passed away Saturday, February 10 at Windsor House Parkside, in Columbiana.

Henry, affectionately known as Lewie and Squeeky, was born, August 26, 1928 in Dunbar, Pennsylvania, the son of James I. and Mary A. Pietracak Kolat.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy, Seaman First Class, Stationed in Saipan and honorably discharged on December 24, 1947.

Henry retired from LTV in Campbell in 1981 after 33 years of service.

His wife, the former Donna Jean Roberts, whom he married on May 23, 1949, passed away on April 16, 2013, 37 days short of 64 years together.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Thomas H. (Nancy) Kolat of Lowellville, Walter R. Kolat of Youngstown, Timothy L. Kolat of Bellefont, Pennsylvania and Susan A. (Larry) Griffith of Salem; grandchildren, Renee Kolat Brophy, Bryon Kolat, Ronald Kolat, Kelly Kolat May, Russell Kolat, Ashley Griffith Hahn, Danielle Kolat Maker, Milissa Kolat Dominick and Jacob Suthers and great-grandchildren, Amanda Brophy, Ryan Brophy, Cheyanne Kolat, Kaylee Kolat, Ryleigh Kolat, Ryan Hahn, Bentley Hahn, Cody May, Noah May, Rilyn Dominick, Bennet Dominick, Luca Dominick, Gabriel Lamphere and Owen Jude Lamphere.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna Jean; a son, Charles R. Kolat, who passed away July 29, 1979; brothers, John, Frank, Andrew, James, Stanley, Joseph, Walter and Robert; sisters, Rose Malachin, Martha Steiner and Mary Stefanick; grandson, Zachary Kolat and great-granddaughter, Angel Marie Maker.

The Kolat family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell.

Margaret Bresko Obituary

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (Formerly Youngstown, Ohio) – Margaret Bresko, 96, formerly of Youngstown, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, February 10, 2018, in Indianapolis, Indiana, following a brief illness.

Margaret, who was known to all as “Peg,” was born August 17, 1921, in Arroyo, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Anna and George Elyko. She was later adopted by Steven and Mary Foltinsky and was lovingly raised by her new family in Ohio.

She graduated from East High School and then dedicated her life to being a homemaker.

Peg married John Bresko, on February 10, 1941. A carpenter, John built their house on Old Furnace Road in Youngstown, where they lived for 60 years.

Peg enjoyed volunteering at her parish, St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, The Golden Pillars and of the Rosary Makers. She was extremely proud of the 4,000-plus rosaries she handmade that were distributed throughout the world.

As patriotic as she was pious, Peg supported many charities that helped veterans. She held various positions, including that of past-president of the Catholic War Veterans, John J. Buckley Post, No. 1292.

For most of her life, Peg reveled in her favorite pastimes; bowling at West Side Lanes and golfing at Mill Creek Park’s Par 3 Golf Course. She loved playing cards her entire life and did so up to one month of her passing. Though always friendly in competition, Peg loved to win! A devoted sports fan, Peg followed “anything that was played with a ball” and was a huge supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes and of the Cleveland Indians.

With her outgoing personality and sharp sense of humor, Peg made friends easily. Those who knew her have commented to her family the impact she made on their lives.

Saddened by Peg’s passing are her children, Carol (Ed) Burkhardt, Peggy (Bob) Krok and Tom (Robin) Bresko; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband, John; a son John J. Bresko and a granddaughter, Stacey Krok Grace.

Family and friends may call from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 16, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home and will continue at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church on South Belle Vista Avenue in Youngstown.

Interment will follow at the parish cemetery on South Schenley Avenue in Youngstown.

WARREN, Ohio -Joyce Annabell, 76, of Warren, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 10, 2018, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

She was born January 22, 1942 in Murphy, North Carolina, a daughter of Glen and Pluma (Brown) Stalcup.

Joyce was educated in North Carolina and in her adult life she was employed with the former Packard Electric Corporation in Warren, doing various jobs for more than 30 years, retiring in 1999.

She enjoyed golfing, playing bocce and she was an avid reader.

Joyce is survived by two children, Michael Perkins, of Waterbury Connecticut and Jodi Buckley, of Fort Myers, Florida. She also leaves behind three brothers, John Stalcup, of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Bob Stalcup, of Mobile, Alabama and Dennis Stalcup of North Cross, Georgia; a sister, Vivian Martin, of Asheville, North Carolina; her longtime companion and partner, Edward Dillon, of Warren and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marlene Helsley and a brother, Gene Stalcup.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 North Park Avenue, Warren, with Pastor James Dittmar officiating.

Friends may call 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17 at the funeral home prior to services.

NILES, Ohio – Lily Mae Croft, 90, passed away Sunday evening, February 11, 2018 at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty, Ohio.

Lily was born on December 24, 1927 in Warren, Ohio, a daughter of the late Wesley Anderson Mason and Rachel (Karnes) Mason.

She was a graduate of Warren Harding High School.

Shortly after high school she married her husband, George Croft on October 14 1950.

She worked at A&P Food Store and then Packard Electric until 1977.

She was devoted to her husband and family; caring for them selflessly.

Lily will be deeply missed by her children, Albert Croft, Karen Dahman, George Croft and Janet Rule; her eight grandchildren, who loved to have overnighters with their grandma, Alyssa Granitto, Adam Dahman, Eric Dahman, Suelene Roy, George Croft, Briana Croft, Anthony Rule and Nick Rule and six great-grandchildren, Ariel Dahman, Gabriella Croft, Vanessa Roy, Rachel Roy, John Roy and Camila Burks, who loved to visit with her.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, George Croft who passed away on March 3, 2016; her brother Charles Mason and her sister, Martha Vesper.

Funeral services for Lily will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Lane Family Funeral Homes Niles Chapel at 415 Robbins Avenue.

Friends and family may visit one hour prior to services from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 16 at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Niles City Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Joseph T. Scavina Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Luke Parish celebrated by Fr. Zachary Coulter for Joseph T. Scavina, 85, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 11, 2018.

Joseph was born January 8, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of the late Matthew and Mary Dovica Scavina.

Joseph graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Joseph worked as a motor inspector for the former Republic Steel and later in the maintenance department at both Masco and the Tippecanoe Country Club.

Joseph was active at St. Luke, including in the Holy Name Society and helping out at bingo. He was also active with JEDNOTA, where he held various officer positions, such as financial secretary and convention delegate.

He was very active and loved sports of all kinds. He was an avid golfer and bowler and in 2001 he bowled 300 game. He cheered for all Ohio sports teams, from the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians to Ohio State and even was a season ticket holder for the YSU football and basketball teams. He would often be found cheering his son and later his nieces and nephews on during their various sports activities.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of almost 62 years, the former Nancy Cozza, whom he married June 2, 1956; his children, Denise Scavina Dutton of Boardman and Robert “Bob” (Jo Ann) Scavina of Columbus; his grandchildren, Charlie Joe (Katie) Vest, Sarah (Kevin) Holmes and Ryan (Missy) Dutton; his great-grandchildren, Josie, Charlotte, Presley and Peyton; his brother-in-law, Frank Mazzarino; his sister-in-law, Audrey Scavina; as well as many special nieces and nephews and their families, along with numerous dear friends.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Diane; his brothers, Michael, Charles and John Scavina and his sisters, Mary Jacobs, Ann Cooper and Helen Mazzarino.

The family has entrusted Joseph’s care to the Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home, where they will receive friends on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service on Friday, February 16 at the church from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Joseph’s family would like to extend special thanks to MVI Hospice and all the medical professionals who helped care for Joseph in his time of need, especially his nephew, Dr. Michael Scavina.

BOARDMAN, Ohio – On Monday, February 12, 2018, Melvin J. Price, age 70, passed away at Hospice House in Poland, Ohio.

Melvin was born in Hendricks, West Virginia on January 7, 1939, to Melvin C. and Nellie (Long) Price.

Melvin is survived by his sons, Derreck Price of Shreveport, Louisiana and Bryant Price of Kutztown, Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Shanyn; siblings, Georgie, Linda, Debbie, Bonnie and Patricia and good friends, Carl and Gerry Stere and Vernon Hughes.

Melvin was the former owner of an retail electronics store and honorably served his county in the United States Air Force.

Burial will take place at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery with full military honors.

Donald A. Splichal Obituary

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – Donald A. Splichal, age 75, of Hempfield Avenue, Hempfield Township, passed away Monday evening, February 12, 2018 in St. Paul’s.

He was born in Dickinson, North Dakota, on March 7, 1942 to Anthony and Mary (Kolar) Splichal.

Don was a graduate of Dickinson (North Dakota) High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1961-1964.

He was employed as a lab technician beginning in 1967 and retiring in 2006 from what is now UPMC Horizon Greenville.

Don was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Greenville.

He was a 4th Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus #1446 Fitzmartin Council, where he was active with the Honor Guard and helped with the weekly bingo and morning breakfasts. He was also was a member of Greenville Family Moose Center #276.

After retirement, Don volunteered at UPMC Horizon Greenville and with the Greenville Railroad Park. For many years he served as a Greenville and Commodore Perry Little League Coach, as well as being involved with Commodore Perry Wrestling.

His other interests included, hunting, fishing, bowling and was an avid NASCAR Fan.

On June 20, 1964, he married the former Bonnie J. Leventry, she survives. Also surviving is his son, Troy A. Splichal and his fiancée, Penny Sangkhavichith of Huntington Beach, California; six sisters, Jerri Schulz of Bizmark, North Dakota, Marlene Hoffman of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, Rita Kostelecky of La Quinta, California, Darlene Schwartz, Mary Ann Schwindt and Connie Stockert, all of Dickinson, North Dakota; a brother, Gene Splichal of Mina, North Dakota and a grandson, Collin Splichal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Donna Splichal and a brother, Dean Splichal.

Calling Hours will be held Friday, February 16, 2018, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main Street, Greenville, Pennsylvania.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 16, 2018, 12:00 p.m. at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 85 N. High Street in Greenville, Rev. V. David Foradori, Pastor, as celebrant.

CANFIELD, Ohio – Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, 65 N. Broad Street, Canfield Chapel, for Gary W. Cook, 64, of Canfield, who died early Monday morning, February 12 at Omni Manor Health Care Center.

Gary was born July 15, 1953, in Youngstown, a son of Lloyd Jefferson and Nina May (Bondesen) Cook.

He was a 1971 graduate of Canfield High School and a lifelong resident.

At age 15 he began working with his father at Canfield Township and later became the road supervisor. For 35 years he and his crew took care of the township infrastructure, writing and presenting grants to benefit the community and dissipating neighborhood disagreements with an innate skill and a genuine smile until he retired in 2011.

He was an extremely generous man, always willing to mow a neighbor’s lawn, fix a friend’s car, or lend a helping hand to a stranger in need. He loved to be outdoors and was often spotted walking his dalmatians or jogging around the block. Known by family and friends to be a practical joker, his cheerfulness and thoughtfulness brought a smile to every person he met.

As an avid Canfield sports fan, he was actively involved in coaching rec soccer for 15 years. Most athletes recognize and remember his bounding cheers echoing from the stands.

In addition to his mother, Nina Cook of Woodbridge, Virginia, Gary leaves his wife, Beverly Vangeloff-Cook, whom he married July 19, 1986; three daughters, Dr. Hillary Ann (Sim) Chang and two grandchildren, Madelyn and Benjamin of Cincinnati, Jenna Carolina (Harrison) Arp of Columbus and Dr. Alys Juliene Cook of Jacksonville, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Jefferson Cook; his late wife, Nancy (Vangeloff) Cook and his sister, Laurel Rupert.

Friends may call on Friday, February 16 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, February 17 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the memorial service at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.

COLUMBIANA, Ohio – Richard A. Scott, 71, passed away Monday morning, February 12, 2018 at Salem Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Scott was born September 7, 1946 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Leonard and Helen Varro Chnapko.

Richard was a skilled craftsman for various companies in the area including Superior Industries and Stanley Steamer.

Richard served in the U.S. Navy stationed in the Mediterranean on the USS Cambria.

He had been a member of the VFW.

He loved his whole family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard had a great sense of humor and never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Griffith Scott, whom he married July 31, 1971; his children, Robert Scott of Bloomington, Indiana, Patricia Scott of Columbiana and Michael Scott and son-in-law Travis Morgan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; six sisters, Donna Jean Mittial, Deborah Aziz, Darlene Bateman, Darla Scott, Denise (Terry) O’Malley and Doreen DeLisio (Mark Carver); two brothers, Douglas Scott and Donald Scott (Debbie Ferreri); five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles Scott; a sister, Delores Donoghue and a brother, David Scott.

Friends will be received from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 with Mr. Greg Aker officiating at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in America’s Cemetery, Hermitage, Pennsylvania where military honors will be accorded.

BOARDMAN, Ohio – A celebration of life memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, February 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell, with Rev. Kevin Marks officiating, for Richard Trexler, 79, who passed away Monday, February 12.

Richard was born June 4, 1938, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the son of Charles and Dorothy Trexler.

He was a 1956 graduate of Allentown High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Later, Richard worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Republic Steel and WCI Steel.

He was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, where he was an active member of the men’s club and the golf league.

Richard will be deeply missed by his wife, the former Mary Ann Macek, whom he married May 30, 1959; his children, Marcia (Frank) Turocy, Mark (Debbie) Trexler, Maria (Jim) Rutana and Melanie (David) Flath; his grandchildren, Megan (Kyle) Brown, Frank (Paula) Turocy, Andrew (Emma) Turocy, Jared (Janine) Turocy, Derek Turocy, Jessica Rutana and Danielle Rutana; great-grandchildren, Makayla Brown, Carson Brown, Camden Brown, Madyn Brown, Isabella Turocy and Hadley Turocy and another great-grandchild on the way; his sister, Jeanette (Webb) Lauer; many nieces and nephews and his special travel companions, John and Anne Thomas and John and Maurene Hritz.

Besides his parents; he was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth Trexler and Ray Trexler; his sister, Sandy Badman; in-laws, Joseph and Ann Macek and his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carol, Dennis and Janet Macek.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests monetary donations be made in Richard’s name to the Rescue Mission, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Youngstown, OH 44510.

The Trexler family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home.

BERLIN CENTER, Ohio – A memorial service celebrating the life of Everett James Cronkshaw will be held at a later date.

Everett passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 at his home.

He was born April 1, 1940 in South Kingston, Rhode Island, the son of James and Elizabeth (Murney) Cronkshaw.

He was raised in Peace Dale, Rhode Island and graduated from South Kingstown High School.

Everett was a Forestry Fire Member before entering the United Sates Coast Guard. He then took a job with the South Kingstown Police Department as a Sargent, retiring after 25 years of service.

He moved to Florida briefly before moving to Ohio to be closer to family.

Everett enjoyed gardening and helping friends. He always had a love for animals and of seafood.

He was a life member of the South Kingstown Elks #1899 and a member of the American Legion Post #737 for 34 years.

Everett is survived by a nephew, James B. Lingo, Jr. of Berlin Center, Pam Lingo and a niece, Cynthia Lingo of Niles. He also leaves great-nephews, Chris (Melani) Muir of Masury, James(Alexa) Lingo and Justin (Josa) Muir both of Boardman and Jason Pringle of Mineral Ridge, as well as two great-great-nephews, Chris Muir, Jr. and Cole Muir and a great-great-niece, Broklyn Olivia Muir.

Besides his parents, Everett was preceded in death by his sister, Frances (James) Lingo and a great-nephew Jeff Pringle.

KINSMAN, Ohio – Donna Rose Szabo, age 87, died on Monday, February 12, 2018.

She was born on April 4, 1930 a daughter of Florence Autumn (Shults) and Thomas Harry Herman.

Donna was a 1948 graduate of Kinsman High School and attended Youngstown Business College.

On December 9, 1950 she married William Alex Szabo.

Donna was a member of the Kinsman United Methodist Church and was the Sunday School treasurer for many years.

She was a member of the Kinsman Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary was an EMT as well as serving as treasurer for many years, a member of the Kinsman Travel Club and the Red Hat Club. When her girls were younger, she was a leader for the Kinsman Girl Scout Troop and was awarded the Juliette Gordon Low award. Donna was a charter member of the Kinsman Rainbow Girls and later became Mother Advisor and served on the board, she was also an active member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed playing the organ, sewing and was known for lending a hand to anyone that needed assistance.

Donna is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years, William A. Szabo; three sisters, Edythe Marcus, Velma Rosner and Ruth Herman and two brothers, Paul and Charles Herman. Survivors include three daughters, Crystal L. (Glenn) Hudspeth of Kinsman, Ohio, Karen L. (Richard) Carlson of Johnston, Ohio and Pamela J. (Rex) Wilcox of Girard, Ohio; a son, W. Alex (Karla) Szabo of Kinsman, Ohio; a brother, W. Eugene Herman of Reno, Nevada; eight grandchildren, Eric, Shannon, Jon, Josh, Katie, Matt, Chad and Ciara; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Colton, Aubrey and Chase and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Kinsman United Methodist Church, 8362 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio with Rev. Patricia Christ officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 17 from 11:00 a.m. until the Order of Eastern Star service at 12:45 p.m. at the church.

Burial will follow in Kinsman Cemetery.

James A. Farmakis Obituary

HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – James A. Farmakis, of Hermitage, passed away at 11:41 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2018 in the Sharon Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Farmakis was born November 6, 1932 in Warren, Ohio, a son of Aristides and Themis (Chalderis) Farmakis.

He moved to the area in the 1940’s and was a 1950 graduate of Sharon High School.

Jim worked at the former Westinghouse Electric Corporation for two years before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Upon his honorable discharge, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Jim owned and operated Ferro Construction for more than 35 years and during his retirement was a consultant and well known developer.

He was a member of the Sharon University Club and the Farrell Lions and Wolves Clubs.

Jim loved spending time with family and friends at his home on Lake Erie in Conneaut, Ohio. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards, particularly pinochle, gin rummy and euchre.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, the former Rosemary Good Horodyski, at home; two daughters, Christina Farmakis-King and her husband, Jeffery, Jackson Center, Pennsylvania and Jamie Zeigler and her husband, Bradley, Shenango Township (Lawrence County), Pennsylvania; a son, A.J. Farmakis and his wife, Jan, Hermitage; two stepsons, John Horodyski of Denver, Colorado and Robert Horodyski and his wife, MaryBeth, Gainesville, Florida; a stepdaughter, Linda Hahn and her husband, Gregory, Canton, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Nicholas Farmakis and his wife, Mary, of Virginia; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Farmakis, Sharpsville and several loving nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Farmakis and his best friend, Rudy Pryately, who also died Monday morning.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Fund, to a local Salvation Army or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Calling hours will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 16 in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State Street, Sharon.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16 in the funeral home.

Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.

TRANSFER, Pennsylvania – Arthur Lee “Art” Rickert, 72, of Transfer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home, surrounded by family.

Art was born on March 17, 1945, to Harold E. and Inis E. (Ewing) Rickert in Tallahassee, Florida.

Art worked for 34 years at Damascus Tube as a millwright until its closing and Winner Steel until his retirement. He also owned and operated A.L. Rickert Excavating.

On September 16, 1964, he married his wife, Shirley A. (McCullough) Rickert, who survives at home.

Art loved watching and following his grandsons’ football games and wrestling matches.

Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Shirley A. Rickert; daughter, Shelley (Shannon) Brightbill of Kentucky; son, William “Bill” (Paula) Rickert of Transfer; granddaughter, Morgan Brightbill; three grandsons, Logan Rickert, Cole Rickert and Connor Brightbill as well as sister-in-law, Beverly “Becky” McCullough of Transfer.

He was preceded in death by father, Harold E. Rickert; mother, Inis E. Rickert and brother, Paul E. Rickert.

Friends may call Friday, February 16 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. also Saturday, February 17 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 124 Main Street, Sharpsville, Pennsylvania 16150.

TOWNSEND, Georgia (Formerly Warren, Ohio) – John D. Borthwick, Jr., 88, died Sunday, February 11, 2018.

Formerly of Warren, Ohio, John was the son of the late Winifred Ivy Ponsford and John D. Borthwick, Sr.

John was born on September 24, 1929, in Linesville, Pennsylvania.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force.

While living in Warren, John was employed by Packard Electric for 33 years and retired in 1993.

He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church and also attended the Church of God of Prophecy, with Pastor Danny Stillwell, while he lived in Georgia.

He is survived by his brother, Floyd Aaron “Ron” Borthwick of Rockwood, Tennessee; his daughter, Deborah Walls of Niles; his two sons, Brian Scott Borthwick of Townsend, Georgia, with whom he lived with in Georgia for five years and James R. Borthwick of Whitehall, Pennsylvania. He loved his family and was proud to be called “Papa”. He leaves behind six beautiful grandchildren, Rebekah, Zacharie, Talmadge, Ian, Joshua and Kabrien and three great-grandchildren, Skylar, Tate and Liam.

Nancy, his wife of 51 years; a son, John and a sister, Freddie preceded him in death.

A memorial service for will be held at Crown Hill’s Chapel Mausoleum in Vienna on Saturday, February 17, at 1:00 p.m.

WEST SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – Shirley J. Thompson, of West Salem Township, formerly of Transfer, died at 6:00 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2018 in St. Paul Homes after a brief illness. She was 79.

Shirley was born October 18, 1938, in Clarksville, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Russell Kennedy and Anna Catherine (Geiwitz) Kennedy.

She was a homemaker and attended Charleston United Methodist Church.

Shirley was a member of REACT Radio Club. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Dean and her husband, Charles of Erie; a son, Donald Thompson, Jr. and his wife, Dyana of Greenville; a sister, Neva Stephenson of West Middlesex; five grandchildren, Alan Dean, Michele Truax, Erica Wilczynski, Elizabeth Thompson and Seth Thompson and six great-grandchildren, Anna, Levi, Paige, Nathan, Keri and Evelynn.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Thompson, Sr. whom she married October 7, 1960 and who passed away May 28, 2001; a sister, Lucille Friga; a brother, James Kennedy and a great-granddaughter, Matilda Jane Ohl.
