Richard Thomas Raidel, Sr., Howland, Ohio

HOWLAND, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Richard Thomas “Dick” Raidel, Sr., 86, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, Ohio.

He was of the Christian faith and very active in churches throughout his life.

He was born March 8, 1933, in Youngstown, the son of George and Katherine Horeth Raidel. Dick was the next to the youngest of 11 children.

On November 24, 1955, he married his wife of 64 years, Adrienne Hiestand. They lived most of their married life in Champion, where they raised three children.

Dick attended Austintown Local Schools and graduated in 1950 from Fitch. He played football and track while at Fitch. He was named to the All-County Team in his senior year. Upon graduation, Dick enrolled at Kent State University. He obtained his bachelor’s dDegree in 1954 and his master’s degree in 1961. He played football while at Kent at the early age of 17. During his career in college he was selected to the All-Mid-American Conference Team. He was Team Captain his senior year. Dick was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and had a tryout with them in 1955.

After his graduation from Kent State, Dick taught and coached football at Brookfield High School. He later served as the school’s Assistant Principal. Following his time as Brookfield’s Assistant Principal, he became Superintendent of Bristol Local Schools. During his tenure as school superintendent, he served as President of the Trumbull County Superintendent Association. He was named as a Buckeye Association Exemplary Superintendent and as an Ohio Local Superintendent of the Year during the years he was a member of those organizations. In 1978, Dick was honored as a recipient of the Ohio Exemplary Educational Leadership Award. After serving 44 years in education, he retired as Superintendent of Lakeview Schools. Lakeview honored him by naming the school’s auditorium the Richard Raidel Auditorium. After his retirement, he served as an interim superintendent at Lordstown Schools and Bristol Local Schools.

Dick was a member of the Kent State Alumni Association and the Kent State Varsity “K”. He was inducted into the Kent State Varsity “K” Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. He enjoyed being a member of the Trumbull County Coaches Association and many school booster clubs, and fondly remembered his 12 years coaching little league baseball. Dick was a member of the Cortland Rotary for many years and was presented the Outstanding Community Service Award in 2001. He was inducted as a member of the Austintown Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Dicks hobbies included trout fishing, hunting, woodworking, woodcarving, old car restoration, biking, collecting old model airplane motors and growing evergreens.

Memories of Dick will be carried on by his loving wife, Adrienne, of Howland; one daughter, Robin (Tom) Hosler of Sylvania and two sons, Rick (Mary Ann) of Bristolville and Randy (Pam) of Champion.

Dick enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren and attending their activities. Keeping him forever in their hearts are Christopher Raidel of Fairview Park, Emily (Chris) Harris of Jacksonville, Florida, Sarah (Cody) Colburn of Wahiawa, Hawaii, Matthew Hosler of Lexington, Kentucky, Jonathan Raidel of Kent, Thomas Hosler of Sylvania and Harrison Hosler of Sylvania.

Memories of Dick will also be carried on by Dorothy Jobigy of Austintown, Dick’s only surviving sibling.

Besides his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine, Marie, infant Rose, Rose, Helen and Matilda and brothers, George, John and Robert. His nephews, Michael (Rennie) Bokesh and Gary Raidel have also preceded him in death.

Calling hours will be 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, February 19, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at the funeral home, with Rev. Matt Lowe officiating.

Dick will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna, Ohio.

WARREN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Larry Beckwith, age 60, of Warren, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.  

He was born August 29, 1959 in Warren, the son of Kenneth and Agnes (Fairby) Beckwith and had lived in the area all his life.

Larry graduated from North Bloomfield High School.

He is sadly missed by his brother, Gerald Beckwith of Warren and his niece, Janet Martin of North Carolina.

His parents and his brother’s twin, Geraldine Beckwith, precede him in death.

Services are private.  

Cremation is taking place.

George Bernard, Howland, Ohio

HOWLAND, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – George Bernard, 86, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at his son’s residence, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was born November 25, 1933, in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late George and Anna (Vargo) Bernard.

George was a 1951 graduate from Ursuline High School.

After graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

Upon returning from Korea, he attended Youngstown University, graduating with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

He worked for S.C. Johnson Wax, retiring after 30 years as a regional sales manager. He was also a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren.

In March 3, 1962, he married Joan Marie Spirko who preceded him in death in seven months prior.

He enjoyed restoring classic muscle cars and vacationing in Las Vegas.

He is survived by his three sons, George (Vhari) Bernard III of Farmington, Joseph Bernard of Bazetta and Christopher Bernard of Cleveland and six grandchildren, Joseph, Christian, Jesse, Mikaela, Christopher and Shawn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and by one brother, Andrew Bernard.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren, OH 44483. A service will follow at the funeral home with the Rev. Simeon B. Sibenik officiating.

Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta.

BESSEMER, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – Alma L. “Teenie” Hiler, 60 of Bessemer, Pennsylvania passed away at the UPMC Jameson hospital on Thursday, February 13, 2020.

Alma was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on July 18, 1959 the daughter of the late Paul L Sr. and Betty Henney Hake.

She was the wife of Dennis J. Hiler, Sr. whom she married on September 29, 2000.

Alma enjoyed motorcycle rides with Dennis, caring for her dogs Zoey, Bear and Stormy, gardening and flowers and her love for her family.

She is survived by her husband Dennis and his children; Chris Hiler, Dennis Jr (Kimberly) Hiler, Joanna Hiler, James (Amber Warren) Hiler all of Kittanning, Pennsylvania and Jared Hiler of New Castle. Her children are Lisa (DeAndre) Johnson of New Castle, April Siciliano also of New castle and Maria Brown of Bessemer. Also survived by, 13 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents, brother’s Paul “Butch” and William Hake and sister’s Jane Zingaro and Shirl Graziani.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday February 16, 2020 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Terry A Cunningham Funeral Home at 203 Oak Street in Bessemer, Pennsylvania.

Nellie E. (Vickers) Burton, Warren, Ohio

WARREN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Nellie E. (Vickers) Burton, 69, of Warren, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Wednesday afternoon, February 12, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Health Center in Warren.

She was born March 4, 1950 in Warren, a daughter of John C. and Grace E. (Lewis) Vickers.

Nellie attended Warren G. Harding High School and was a graduate of Youngstown State University, where she achieved a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

She had been employed with the C.P. Hall Company of Chicago, IL, for 15 years, prior to retiring.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Elizabeth (Tim) Kriner, of Cortland. She also leaves behind grandchildren; Samantha (Zach Tenney) Kriner, of Warren, Kristi (Corey) Metzenroth, of Champion, Michael Kriner, of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and Dustin (Hope) Burton, of Farmdale; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Burton, of Champion; sisters; Shirley (Jack) Hill, of Kinsman, Alice Monti, of Warren, Jenny Breino, of Sugarland, Texas and Doris Vickers, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brothers; Jim (Lori) Vickers, of Fallsbrook, California and Tom (Marie) Vickers, of Newton Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was so proud to be great grandma to Jacob and Cole Tenney, Alexis and Zoe Metzenroth, Emerson and Jameson Burton and Oliver Burton.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Richard Burton, a brother, John Vickers, Jr., a sister, Mildred Jane Vickers and a grandson, Nicholas Burton.

In keeping with Nellie’s wishes there will be no funeral services or calling hours. A memorial service in her honor is being planned for at a later date.

Arrangements for Mrs. Burton are being provided by the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 North Park Ave., Warren.

Paul M. Hrosch, Austintown, Ohio

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Paul M. Hrosch, 80, passed away surrounded by his family on February 12, 2020 at Briarfield at Ashley Circle.

Paul was born on February 25, 1939 in Youngstown, Ohio the son of the late Paul J. and Mary T. (Pollock) Hrosch.

He was a lifelong resident of Youngstown graduating from Campbell Memorial High School in 1956.

He was employed as a Branch Manger for AVI Food Systems for over 40 years.

Paul coached in the Mill Creek Little League and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop #59. He was a proud supporter of the YSU Penguin Club and an avid YSU Football fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and trips to Las Vegas.

Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Glenda Gillie Hrosch, whom he married August 9, 1958; two daughters, Glenda (Ed) Wheland of North Carolina and Michelle (James) Itts of Austintown; one son Paul J. (Tammy) Hrosch of Springfield; ten grandchildren, Ed (Hilary) Wheland, Joshua Wheland, Mary Ellen Wheland, Emilie (Andrew) Cahill, Shawn Wheland, Matthew Wheland, Lauren (Tom) Jenkins, Shayla Fischer, Alyssa (Dyllon) Lafferty and Marlaina Hrosch, eight great grandchildren, AJ, Kaycie, Jackson, Tyler, Mason, Ryan, Luke, Dawson and one on the way. Paul is also survived by his sister Anna Summers of Michigan.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16, 2020 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and again Monday, February 17, 2020 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. at St. Christine Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m..

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Ronald Joseph Sprague, 80, of North Bloomfield, Ohio passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at Windsor House in Champion.

He was born September 22, 1939, in Warren, Ohio, the son of the late Joseph Sprague and Bernice (Warren) Sprague.

On May 5, 1985, he married the former Ann Halkovics. They have shared over thirty-four years of marriage and many wonderful memories.

Ronald was a truck driver for PVP Industries for years and was also a printer. Prior to working for PVP Industries, he worked for Joe Sprague Trucking.

Ronald was a member of St. William Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed antiquing, and traveling.

Ronald’s memory will be carried on by his loving wife, Ann Sprague of North Bloomfield, Ohio; children, Daryl (Melody) Sprague of North Bloomfield, Ohio, Richard (Mary) Babnik of Champion, Ohio, Marianne Babnik of North Bloomfield, Ohio, Christine Farley of Warren, Ohio, Craig (Shannon) Babnik of Mantua, Ohio and Timothy (Jennifer) Babnik of Hiram, Ohio; grandchildren, Cassie, Sirena, Jennifer, Aura, Joe, Jillian, Aidan, Zoe, Reagan and Beckham and great-grandchildren, Xander, Christian, Leo, Zane and Kenji.

Besides his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Sprague.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 17, 2020, at St. William Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael D. Balash as celebrant.

Interment will be in Brownwood Cemetery, North Bloomfield, Ohio.

Margaret M. Rimko, Sharon, PA

SHARON, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – Margaret M. Rimko, 97, a lifelong resident of Sharon, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Saturday morning, February 8, 2020, in her residence.

Mrs. Rimko was born in the very same house on February 20, 1922, a daughter of the late John J. and Mary E. (Nugent) Keaveny.

She attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School and graduated from Sharon High School in 1940.

A dedicated wife and loving mother, Margaret devoted her life to caring for her family and their home. Prior to the birth of her children, she worked in both the mailing and accounting offices of the former Sharon Transformer Div. of Westinghouse Electric Corp. In 1973, she began working alongside her daughter, Connie, at Daffin’s Candies in Sharon, retiring in 2001.

Margaret was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon.

While her children were young, she volunteered as a Den Mother. Later in life she enjoyed traveling with her sisters and children, most notably to experience her heritage in Ireland, travel through Europe, and visit family in California, Hawaii, and Colorado. Margaret cherished her lifelong friendship of more than 70 years with Eileen Oster.

Her husband, Michael Rimko, whom she married August 23, 1947, passed away January 27, 2004.

Surviving are three daughters, Connie (David) Leon, West Middlesex; Sheila (Eddy) Schumacher, Colorado and Kathleen (Kelvin) Ho, Hawaii; three sons, Robert (Virginia) Rimko, Transfer; Tom (Cindy) Rimko, Jamestown; and Kevin (Karen King) Rimko, Farrell; four sisters, Monica Grundmann, Mary (Jerry) Bynum, Eileen (Ed) Staal and Joanne (Phil) Hernandez, all of California; nine grandchildren, Amanda (Chris) Derksen, Stephen Rimko, Jessica (Chris) Duncan, Kasha (Prentis Hemphill) Ho, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Rimko, Melissa (Jason) Hummell, Jenna Rimko, Alaina Ho, and Kelsey Zurawsky and six great-grandchildren, Finley and Gracie Hummell, Blaire and Drew Duncan and Emily and Claire Derksen.

In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by three brothers, Austin, Jack and Maurice Keaveny, and her sister, Kathleen Burch.

Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2020 in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, in the funeral home, with Rev. Thomas Whitman officiating.

Helen L. (Reinhard) French, New Castle, PA

NEW CASTLE, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – Helen L. (Reinhard) French, 92, formerly of Northview Ave., New Castle, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, February 12, 2020, at her home in Pulaski.

Mrs. French was born April 21, 1927, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Carl and Elsie (Gillespie) Reinhard. A lifelong area resident, she graduated from New Castle High School in 1944.

A dedicated homemaker for many years, Helen later worked as a transportation assistant and secretary at the Department of Defense for 12 years.

A devout catholic, Helen was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, where she served as a lector and belonged to the Altar-Rosary Society. She was previously a member of St. Mary Church, New Castle.

She volunteered at the Dwelling Place, Farrell, Pennsylvania and was also active in Sweet Adeline’s and Compassionate Friends, Hermitage.

Her husband of nearly 60 years, Robert C. French, whom she married September 18, 1948, preceded her in death September 7, 2008.

Surviving are two daughters, Helen McAnallen, with whom she made her home in Pulaski and G. Alane Ferrara, of New Castle; a son, Robert Mark French, of Charlotte, North Carolina.; two brothers, Thomas Reinhard, of Olmstead, Ohio and R. Daniel Reinhard, of Oak Park, IL; a sister, Madelon Logan, of Rocky River, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by a son, Brain French; a daughter, Mary Jo Jones; a grandson, John Robert McVay; two brothers, Carl and J. Jude Reinhard; two sisters, Charlotte Cozza and Mary Dominicis and a son-in-law, Louis Ferrara.

The family would like to thank “The Team” whom took such exceptional care of her, a niece, Christine McCune; and friends, Donna Peterson, Rene Welsh, and Mary Ann Medved.

Calling hours will be 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2020 in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2020 in St. Mary’s Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, with Rev. Brendan Dawson, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Mary’s Cemetery, Union Township.

James A. Jovenall, Hermitage, PA

HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – James A. Jovenall, 79, of Hermitage, passed away peacefully on February 13t, 2020 in UPMC Farrell Hospital with family at his side.  

James was born on February 17, 1940 to Joseph and Nancy (DePofi) Jovenall in Sharon, Pennsylvania.

He graduated from Sharpsville High School class of 1958 as class president.

He married his high school sweetheart; Inez L. Gibson who passed away in 2014. They were blessed with 54 years together and enjoyed spending winter months in their Florida home.

James and his wife Inez owned and operated the Jovenall Insurance Agency for 37 years. He was very active in the community serving as councilman and then Mayor of Clark Borough, treasurer of the Clark Sewer Authority, Clark Fireman’s Relief Association, and president of the Mercer County Borough’s Association. Jim also served as an elected member of the Mercer County Government Study Commission. He was a founding member of the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments and served a term as president. In 1973 he was appointed by the Mercer County Commissioners to serve as the first director of the Senior Citizens Department which later became the Agency on Aging. Jim was also an unsuccessful candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate, losing to R. Bud Dwyer. Jim was an avid golfer and loved to travel.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew R.C. Church, Kedron Masonic Lodge #389 and a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Consistory. He loved the time he got to spend with his family and watching his grandchildren play sports, often saying that being a grandfather kept him young.

James is survived by his children, Laurie (Greg) Weigle, Stephen (Christine) Jovenall, Rebecca (Christian) Farmakis, beloved grandchildren, Joshua, Nicholas and Aaron Marriotti, Jason Jovenall, Kaitlyn Malgeiri, Jackson and Esme Farmakis, and one great grandchild, Aria Malgeiri. He is also survived by his brothers, Frank (Darline), Joseph (Tammy), William and his friend Susie, and sister in law, Marsha.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Jovenall.

Friends may call Sunday February 16, 2020 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home 124 Main St. Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday February 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, with Father Matt Strickenberger, officiating. Friends are welcome to meet directly at church.

POLAND, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – On Monday, February 10, 2020, Marshall Pierce, age 77, of Lima, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Poland.

He was born in Greenville, AL on July 9, 1942 to William and Ethel (Mack) Pierce.

Marshall proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Ware) Pierce; daughters, Estrella (Jesse) Wayne, Yvette Drummond, Ethel Hawkins, Tina Pearson, Ronda (Christopher) Roberts, Marcella Kirby, Shalawn (Kenneth) Ashley; sons, Lavaughn (Evelyn) Pierce, Marshall Pierce Jr, Devon Pierce, Michael Parks; sisters, Cynthia Brown, Regina (Gary) Dowdy, Juanita Malone; brothers, Gary (Yvonne) Ison, Kenneth Ison, Tod (Silke) Ison; twenty-seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Marshall was preceded in death by his daughter, Paulette Pierce-Pope; brothers, Lorenzo Pierce, Eric Ison, Craig Ison.

From now until Saturday evening, February 15, 2020 the Pierce family will receive guest at the home of Marshall’s daughter and son-in-law, Estrella and Jesse Wayne, 935 Donna Dr., Hermitage, PA 16148.  

The formal Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Friendship Baptist Church, 339 Spearman Ave., Farrell, PA 16121.  Immediately following the Service everyone is welcome for the Repast at the VFW Post 5286, 1233 Idaho St., Farrell, PA 16121.

GREENVILLE, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – Stella D. Barrett, age 87, of Greenville, Pennsylvania, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2020.

She was born on September 30, 1932 in Franklinville, New York.

She was a 1949 graduate of Ten Broeck Academy in Franklinville, New York and a 1951 graduate Bryant & Stratton Business Institute (Accounting and Secretarial Course) in Buffalo, New York.

She was an administrative assistant for 24 years at Werner Company, retiring in 2000.

Stella was a devoted loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, reading books, taking short trips and visiting wineries.

On September 10, 1977 Stella married William K. Barrett, he passed away January 11, 2020.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville and a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Olean, New York, where she was past president of the Women’s Association. She was also a member of OES Electra Chapter 84, Olean, New York, where she was previously the worthy matron and the Red Hat Society. She was a volunteer at UPMC Greenville.

Stella is survived by a daughter, Julie Monroe ( David Maggio) of Fredonia, New York; three sons, Andrew (Tami) Barrett of Greenville, North Carolina, Jon (Tina) Barrett of Olean, New York and Mike (Lynn) Barrett of Margate, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Leota Jones and Jean Swartz both of Warren, Pennsylvania; two brothers-in-law, Dick Barrett of Warren, Pennsylvania and Ray (Leona) Barrett of Greencastle, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Walter and Esther “Myrle” (Weaver) Dallas of Franklinville, New York and her husband, Bill.

A Celebration of Life for Stella will be held Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Gallery Grille Restaurant, 365 Mercer Road, Greenville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice, 3124 Wilmington Road #108, New Castle, PA 16105 or St. Paul’s Senior Living Community, 339 E. Jamestown Road, Greenville, PA 16125.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Mrs. Lillian Josephine Eskew Tyson, 95, of Youngstown, entered eternal rest peacefully in the comforts of her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.

Lillian was born July 3, 1924 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Arsthus “Arthur”  and Pearl Chapman Eskew. 

During her early years she was employed with McCauley Memorial Funeral Home, Youngstown City Schools and Touch of Class, retiring in 2006. 

She was a member of the O.E.S. Covenant Chapter # 48. 

She enjoyed cleaning, growing plants and spending time with family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her four daughters, Delores Eskew Wylie of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, her caregiver, Ernestine Carlock with whom she made her home, Mary Halfacre and Crystal (John) Little all of Youngstown; 27 grandchildren, including her caregivers, Denise Carlock-Venable and Michael Carlock; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curlen Tyson, Sr; a son, Curlen “Sonny” Tyson, Jr.; three grandsons; a great-granddaughter; four sisters, Johnnie Bell Lewis, Maggie Lewis, Marian Randall and Margaret Scott and three brothers, Shedrick Eskew, Milton Eskew, Sr. and Arthur Eskew.

Visitation will be Monday, February 17, 2020 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., with funeral services following  immediately at 11:30 a.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held by the O.E.S Covenant Chapter #48 at 10:30 a.m.

BESSEMER, Pennsylvania (MyValleyTributes) – Verna Ellen Woods of Bessemer, Pennsylvania passed away at her residence on Thursday, February 13, 2020 from a chronic illness. She was 60 years old

Verna was born in Youngstown, Ohio on January 15, 1960 the daughter of the late James and Ester Bunnell Gilbert.

She was the wife of John Woods whom she married on February 5, 1977, he survives.

Besides her husband, Verna leaves her daughters, Mary Woods and Stephanie Woods both of Bessemer and Amanda (Brian) Kelley of Pulaski; her three grandchildren, Robert, Kaylee and Payton Kelley all from Pulaski; sisters, Elizabeth (Paul) Gravatt, Tina Gilbert, Janine Sampias and Jamie Jo Gilbert (Sherry) all of New Castle and several nieces and nephews

Verna was preceded in death by mother, Ester and her in-laws, Arthur and Mary Woods

Verna will be remembered for her love of Bingo, reading and spending her years with her family. She was of the kindness soul and will be deeply missed.

SEBRING, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Ardena M. Sharpnack 89 of Sebring passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020 in Canton.

Ardena was born in Alliance, Ohio on July 13, 1930 the daughter of the late William and Ida (Launer) Poorman.

She was a member of the Sebring “Quaker Hill” Friends Church.

When she was able, she enjoyed traveling with her family and could be found drawing and reading in her spare time but especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and her dogs.

She is survived by her son, Douglas L. (Kim) Bartlett of Alliance. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Shelley Bartlett, Shannon Bartlett and Heather McJunkins and a great-grandson, Brayden.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on January 1, 1995; a brother, Francis E. Conrad and her son, Gregory Bartlett.

A private graveside service will be held at Grandview Cemetery in Sebring.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Services will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 at 12:00 Noon, with calling hours from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Campbell Ohio, for Lillian Smith, who departed this life on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at St Elizabeth Hospital.


Lillian was born in Campbell, Ohio, the daughter of John Thomas Raines, Sr. and Lillian Harris Raines.


She graduated from Campbell Memorial High School and retired from the U.S. Post Office.


“Diddy,” as she was fondly called by her family, had five brothers, John T., Raines, Jr. (Audrey), both deceased, Lawrence (Louise), both deceased, Nathan (Vera deceased), Rodger (Connie) and Edmond (Rebecca). She also had two sisters, Margret Cox (Bill), both deceased and Mary Royster.


Lillian was an avid bridge player, belonging to many bridge clubs for at least 60 years. She was an excellent player, winning many trophies and loved traveling to bridge tournaments. She also loved playing poker and reading. She loved crafting and painting and to say she was an excellent cook is an understatement. 


Lillian was married to Raymond Prisby, Jr. and Haywood Smith, both deceased.


Lillian leaves to cherish her memory, her children, JoAnn Thompson (Allan), Patsy Prisby, Raymond Prisby III, David Richie (Beverly) and Denise Richie; her grandchildren, Raymond Prisby IV, Arenda Lee (Charles), Lian Prisby; her loving caregivers for the last two years; David Richie, Jr.,  Kenneth Richie (deceased) and Tracy Richie. She had many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.


She will be sadly missed. We will miss her wonderful sense of humor, her generosity, her cooking and her joyful, feisty, indomitable spirit.

WARREN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Carmel W. Sterling, 94, of Warren, Ohio died February 12, 2020, at Community Skilled Health Care Centre.

He was born March 5, 1925, in Morgantown, West Virginia, a son of the late Charles Sterling and the late Amy (McElwain) Sterling.

Carmel was drafted before his high school graduation by the United States Army, where he served as a surgical technician with the 120th General Hospital Group during World War II.

Upon returning home he was employed at Mullins Manufacturing, Airco Corporation and Automotive, Inc.

Carmel was an active member of the Tod Avenue United Methodist Church, where he served as the Head Usher and was part of the Willing Workers Group and the Worship and Visitation Committees.

He enjoyed playing golf and was a Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Red Sox fan.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Marsha Orr of Warren, Ohio; a grandson, Benjamin Orr of Parma Heights, Ohio, along with several nieces and nephews.

Carmel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret M. Sterling; four brothers, Charles, Ernest, John and Wallace Sterling and three sisters, his twin sister, Carmilla Brown, Lucille Gray and Helen Sandy.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where Rev. Thomas Badanjek will officiate.

Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at funeral home prior to services.

Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery, Bazetta Township, Ohio.

The family requests that material contributions be made to American Legion Post #540, 5789 Louise Avenue NW, Warren, OH 44483, in his memory.

 Mr. Clay was born January 6, 1967 in Youngstown, a son of Solomon II and Evelyn McKinney Clay. 

He was a graduate of The Rayen School. 

He loved fishing, cooking and being with family.

He leaves to cherish his memories six children, LaKeisha , Frank, Brandon, Sr., Donte, Tyreese and Rashod Perry all of Youngstown; a brother, Thomas Dwayne Clay; 15 grandchildren; the mother of his children, Charlotte Perry; an uncle, Jerry McKinney and a host of other relatives and friends.                                                                                                                                                        

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Solomon Clay III and two grandchildren, Brandon Perry, Jr. and La’Vail Perry.

He is survived by one brother, Chuck Kelly of Wampum, Pennsylvania; sisters, Phyllis Kwolek of Wampum, Pennsylvania and Jo Morlan of East Palestine, Ohio; nephews, Charlie Kelly, Jr., Jonathan Kelly and his wife, Kelly, of Wampum, Pennsylvania and Scott McCown and his wife, Robin, of New Castle, Pennsylvania; niece, Bridgett McDaniel and her husband, Melvin, of New Castle, Pennsylvania; great-nephews, Darrell Harding and his wife, Annette, Christopher Houston and his wife, Alyssha, Jamie Houston and his wife, Kirsten and Joshua McCown, all of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Corey McCown and his wife, Adrianna, of Georgia, Matthew Kelly of Wampum, Pennsylvania and Isaac Houston of New Castle, Pennsylvania.

He worked as a farmer and enjoyed spending time with his friends.

Interment will be in Clinton Cemetery, Wampum, Pennsylvania.
